How to Make Any Room a Home

Everyone needs a space of their own. But your “space” of course, can sometimes be seriously limiting, and that goes especially for those of us who live in shared accommodations. When your entire life happens in a single bedroom in an apartment shared by roommates—or the basement of somebody’s house, or maybe just half a dorm room—it’s hard to recreate all the comforts of an entire home inside four walls (or fewer!). It’s difficult, yes, but not impossible.

To make your single room count, you can trick it out with lots of accessories that give off cozy vibes, plus a few creature comforts that make life a little more bearable. Try one (or all) of these on for size :

• Give yourself an entryway : Add a place by the door to drop shoes, hang your purse and keys, and a mirror to check yourself before you leave.
• Create a lounging space : Use a small sofa or chair, or make your bed a cozy hangout space with pillows.
• Make it homey : Don’t neglect things like a rug, window coverings and plants. A little touch here and a little touch there is all it takes.
• Get creative with storage : Use slim bins to slide off-season clothes under the bed and stash knick knacks in baskets that you can leave under a table or desk.
• Make your surfaces do double duty : A desk can be used as a dining table, and a windowsill can be used as a bookshelf.
• Frame your art : Yes, even posters! It makes a huge difference.
• Play with mirrors : Use a mirror to fool the eye that the room is larger. Place a mirror opposite a window to make the whole room brighter.
• Add cosy lighting : Use your mood lighting instead of your overhead lights, since overhead lights can be harsh.
