The holiday season is the time of year that old friends reunite, and distant family members come back to spend a few days reminiscing and celebrating together. Preparing the home for guests visiting from out of town can seem like an arduous task, but by spending a few hours cleaning, rearranging, and making effort to accommodate their needs, guests staying over for the holiday season will arrive and leave feeling welcomed and taken care of.
Here are three tips to help get you started on preparing the home for out of town visitors who plan to stay for longer than a night this holiday season.

Reorganize Your Home
A simple reorganization of the furniture in your rooms can create a lot more space for guests to settle in and make the home theirs for a few days. Start by assessing where you think guests will be spending the most time outside the bedroom – usually the living room, kitchen, dining room, and bathrooms. If the areas don’t have enough seating, add some. Vice versa, if the areas are too crammed, reorganize the room to be more spacious and open.

Clean to Make a Good Impression
Make sure your home is as clean as possible and maintained throughout their stay. Start by clean the most trafficked areas of your home, such as your living room, kitchen and mudroom. In addition to typical cleaning tasks such as vacuuming and dusting, look in spots that aren’t particularly addressed in your regular home cleaning. For example, dust on the ceiling fans or on top of tall furnishings. Pay special attention to the doorways, as the grooves at the base and the welcome mat area can become unsightly and unclean with time.
Tangentially related (and often overlooked) to your house preparation is your family’s vehicle. If you’ve volunteered to pick up your guests from the airport, make sure your vehicle is clean and enough space is available for their belongings.

Apportion Storage Space for Guests
Just as your vehicle should have enough space for your guest’s belongings, so should your home. In the guest rooms, take clothes out of dressers and store them in the separate closet to make room for your guest’s clothing. Having to constantly rummage through a suitcase for a weekend can get tiresome, so allowing guests the room to spread out and store things will make them feel more at home. Additionally, ensure bathrooms are fully stocked, there is plenty of food available, and that your guests have everything they need to be comfortable for a few days’ stay.

At the end of the day, the holidays should be spent anticipating your guests instead of stressing over them. Take a deep breath and stick to your plan. If you do, you’ll have no problem exceeding your guests’ expectations!
