{"id":1096,"date":"2016-02-29T08:55:04","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T16:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/?p=1096"},"modified":"2016-02-27T08:31:11","modified_gmt":"2016-02-27T16:31:11","slug":"housing-prices-a-concern-across-canada-not-just-vancouver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/2016\/02\/housing-prices-a-concern-across-canada-not-just-vancouver\/","title":{"rendered":"Housing Prices a Concern Across Canada, Not Just Vancouver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vancouverites might scoff, but it appears most Canadians agree that housing prices are too high, no matter where you live.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to a new survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute, nearly half of Canadians polled living in urban centres say, \u201cthe cost of buying a place to live in their neighbourhoods is either \u2018high\u2019 or \u2018unreasonably high.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some 32% say housing prices are \u201cunreasonably high,\u201d while 23% say it\u2019s \u201chigh, but understandable given the area.\u201d Another 32% say it\u2019s \u201creasonable overall,\u201d while just 5% say house prices for their area are \u201cmaybe a bit too low\u201d and 8% were uncertain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perceptions of real-estate prices is also broken down by city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Metro Vancouver, 70% of respondents said housing prices were \u201cunreasonably high,\u201d while 17% said they were \u201chigh, but understandable given the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLooking at the data in this way, it\u2019s clear that Vancouver-area residents remain most frustrated by real-estate costs,\u201d read a summary released late Thursday. \u201cHowever, as (these poll results) demonstrate, a significant proportion of residents in smaller urban centres don\u2019t exactly see themselves rolling in clover when it comes to their own markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two out of three respondents also agreed that government should do more to rein in the real-estate market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In BC, 74% of respondents said government should be more involved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just this month, rule changes brought in by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation required a 10% down payment, up from 5%, on purchases of property priced at $500,000 or more. Even so, the survey found that roughly three-quarters of Canadians still had no plans to buy property in 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The average Vancouver house price is at just over $1 million, while Halifax boasts the lowest average at $262,027.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The survey was conducted online between Feb. 2 and 10, from a random sample of 5,867 Canadian adults.
