{"id":11700,"date":"2019-02-20T10:10:03","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T18:10:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/?p=11700"},"modified":"2019-02-19T18:42:57","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T02:42:57","slug":"more-young-professionals-are-coming-to-metro-vancouver-than-are-leaving-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/2019\/02\/more-young-professionals-are-coming-to-metro-vancouver-than-are-leaving-it\/","title":{"rendered":"More Young Professionals are Coming to Metro Vancouver Than are Leaving It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Concerns that the high cost of housing is driving Metro Vancouver\u2019s young professionals into a mass exodus to find more affordable homes in less expensive regions are unfounded, according to one data analyst.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jens von Bergmann, founder of Vancouver-based analytics firm MountainMath, crunched census data between 2006 and 2016 and found more young professionals \u2013 defined as those with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree \u2013 arriving in the Vancouver Census Metroplitan Area (CMA) than leaving it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Von Bergmann broke down the numbers of people with bachelor\u2019s degrees and those without in each of the 2006, 2011 and 2016 census reports, within three age groups. He found that in the Vancouver CMA, all but one of those cohorts increased in number during that time \u2013 and population growth was highest among young people with bachelor\u2019s degrees (see chart below). The only cohort to slightly decrease in population in the Vancouver CMA during that decade was those aged 50-59 without bachelor\u2019s degrees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYoung people with university degrees continued to arrive in greater numbers than they left well through their thirties and on into their forties,\u201d wrote von Bergmann in his blog on the topic.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/?attachment_id=11701\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11701\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-11701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/BIV-288x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/BIV-288x176.jpg 288w, https:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/BIV.jpg 688w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSource : doodles.mountainmath.ca<br \/>\nCensus data on net migration in four Canadian metropolitan areas by education level, between 2006 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Von Bergmann said there is no need to worry about a \u2018brain drain\u2019 in growing cities like Vancouver, and we don\u2019t need to worry about professionals leaving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cDue to better pay, professionals are better equipped to deal with a tight housing market than most others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If we want to prevent more displacement, he said, we should focus on those actually at risk: the poor and working class.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMore housing can lead to a more equitable city with room for people who aren\u2019t well-paid professionals or independently wealthy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThat suggests both building more and promoting a lot more non-market and rental housing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biv.com\/article\/2019\/02\/housing-related-brain-drain-metro-vancouver-myth-says-analyst\">Housing-Related &#8220;Brain Drain&#8221;
