{"id":11781,"date":"2019-03-01T11:11:31","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T19:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/?p=11781"},"modified":"2019-02-22T08:26:13","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T16:26:13","slug":"bank-of-canada-will-take-interest-rate-hikes-easier-this-year-after-aggressive-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/2019\/03\/bank-of-canada-will-take-interest-rate-hikes-easier-this-year-after-aggressive-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank of Canada will Take Interest Rate Hikes Easier This Year After Aggressive 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The unexpectedly weak Canadian housing market is one factor making it likely Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz will take a less aggressive approach to interest rates this year, notes an economist with one of the country\u2019s biggest banks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Bank is still leaning towards lifting rates, but not by much and not anytime soon,\u201d writes Sal Guatieri, a senior economist with BMO, in response to Poloz\u2019s speech before the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Housing market observers monitor the central bank\u2019s policy rate, also known as the key or overnight rate, because it, along with bond yields, influences mortgage rates in Canada. Since July 2017, the Bank of Canada has five times hiked the policy rate by 25 basis points.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most recent hike was in October, when the central bank increased the rate to 1.75 percent, where it has remained. Last year, many observers had anticipated the Bank of Canada would continue with its bearish approach and raise the policy rate more than once this year, but increasingly the consensus appears to be that borrows must brace for just one hike this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe expect just more rate hike this cycle, but not until December,\u201d writes Guatieri, who in his response to Poloz\u2019s speech outlines comments that support this view. \u201cHe (Poloz) repeated that households are more sensitive to higher rates due to elevated debt.
