Wade, who is also the Owner and Lead Designer of Wade Works Creative and a Liberty Mutual consultant, specializes in helping homeowners create the perfect indoor and outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As you can imagine, he\u2019s busy, but Freshome asked him to stop and share a few tips on how to recover from winter and get your home and yard prepped for summer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Service your air conditioner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI recommend checking out your air conditioning system in the spring to ensure it\u2019s working properly before the weather really warms up,\u201d Wade says. The first step is to change the system\u2019s filter. \u201cClogged and dirty filters make air conditioning systems work harder, stay on longer and cost more to run.\u201d Wade recommends changing heating and air filters every two to four months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After changing the filter, he recommends turning on the unit to see how it is working. \u201cGive it a minute, but if the AC doesn\u2019t start doing its job quickly, I\u2019d recommend checking your fuses and circuit breakers,\u201d Wade says. If that doesn\u2019t make a difference, or you\u2019re getting ghost readings, he recommends calling a professional to assess the situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Clean your windows and screens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wade cleans his windows by filling a spray bottle with window cleaning solution and using a squeegee or some newspaper to clean the glass since this leaves it streak-free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important to remember that everyone\u2019s windows fare differently after the winter,\u201d Wade says, advising homeowners to look for signs of dry rot. \u201cIf you live in a colder climate, look for any water damage caused by melting ice or snow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also recommends checking the seals around the window. \u201cRecaulk or replace damaged weather stripping where needed,\u201d Wade says. \u201cThose seals will work to keep the cool air inside and the hot air out all summer long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And don\u2019t forget about your window screens. \u201cTake time to clean them, inspect them, repair any damage and reinstall the screens in your windows.\u201d Not sure how to repair damaged screens? Wade says you can find a repair kit at most hardware stores. \u201cAlso, the best way to wash your screens is by using a hose \u2014 not a pressure washer \u2014 and some mild detergent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Inspect outdoor plumbing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Inspecting your outdoor plumbing is another maintenance task you should perform as the weather heats up. \u201cStart by removing insulators from all outdoor faucets and then turn on the water,\u201d Wade says. \u201cIf it isn\u2019t flowing as it normally should, that likely means that there is an issue with your pipes and it\u2019s time to call a plumber.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you have an in-ground irrigation system, he recommends calling a professional to tune up your system and ensure that it\u2019s operating efficiently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Get your yard ready<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the weather starts warming up, Wade also recommends getting your yard ready. \u201cI like to do a full inspection of everything left outside during the winter, like playground equipment.\u201d He says he\u2019s looking for rust or areas that may be worn down by the weather, and starts troubleshooting from there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After that, Wade says he\u2019s onto the fun part. \u201cI love bringing lawn and patio furniture out of storage and freshening them up.\u201d He also sands and repaints if necessary. \u201cRedesigning \u2014 or even redecorating \u2014 an outdoor space gets me excited because I\u2019m thinking about all the time that will be spent there with friends and family.\u201d Also, consider ways that you can erase the boundary between inside and outdoors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Proactively maintain your home<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you stay on top of home upkeep, Wade says you can avoid future headaches. \u201cIn fact, a study from Liberty Mutual Insurance revealed 69 percent of consumers have procrastinated on home maintenance and repairs,\u201d he says.
