{"id":12773,"date":"2019-06-14T10:10:02","date_gmt":"2019-06-14T17:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/?p=12773"},"modified":"2019-06-08T08:34:48","modified_gmt":"2019-06-08T15:34:48","slug":"real-estate-affordability-worsened-by-taxes-limited-options","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/2019\/06\/real-estate-affordability-worsened-by-taxes-limited-options\/","title":{"rendered":"Real Estate Affordability Worsened by Taxes &#038; Limited Options"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In contrast to previous surveys that have shown widespread support for new housing taxation, a new poll has found that 74% of BC residents believe additional taxes, fees and regulatory red tape have made housing less affordable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The poll of 1,001 British Columbians, carried out by Ipsos on behalf of the Urban Development Institute and published June 3, also found respondents to be in widespread support of new housing forms in traditionally single-family neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It found that 75% Listings strongly agreed (30%) or somewhat agreed (45%) with the statement, \u201cMunicipalities should allow a greater diversity of housing options within single-family neighbourhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And 74% said they strongly agreed (34% or somewhat agreed (40%) with the statement, \u201cHome prices and rents remain high because there are too few housing options,\u201d while 71% said that building approval processes are too lengthy and need to be fixed. In addition, 68 per cent agreed governments aren\u2019t doing enough to encourage new rental home construction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Anne McMullin, UDI president and CEO, said, \u201cMunicipalities can take as long as five years to approve a new rental proposal, and it can take another two to three years to get permits and build. Just think of that: We have a rental crisis today but in some communities, new homes for people won\u2019t be move-in ready until 2027. The approval process is broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The poll also found that :<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 72% of respondents don\u2019t believe there has been an increase in affordable housing options over the past two years \u2013 with 45% saying it has worsened and 27% saying it has stayed the same;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 70% said they believe the actions of current provincial and municipal governments have not improved (35%) or have even worsened (35%) housing affordability; and<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 80% agreed with the statement, \u201cWe need to approve more housing options close to existing and new transit hubs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The UDI said in its survey release, \u201cWhile all levels of government say they are working to address British Columbia\u2019s housing challenges, the Ipsos poll shows citizens remain dissatisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">McMullin added, \u201cFamilies, workers, seniors and students need housing options now. More studies, lengthy planning reports and task forces won\u2019t solve the problem.
