{"id":1565,"date":"2016-04-12T11:11:13","date_gmt":"2016-04-12T18:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/?p=1565"},"modified":"2016-04-12T09:57:11","modified_gmt":"2016-04-12T16:57:11","slug":"data-gaps-show-need-for-better-foreign-buyer-stats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.roryc.ca\/blog\/2016\/04\/data-gaps-show-need-for-better-foreign-buyer-stats\/","title":{"rendered":"Data Gaps Show Need for Better Foreign Buyer Stats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We now track foreign investment in condos, but it\u2019s home purchases that we really need to monitor<br \/>\nThe Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation (CMHC) recently released their April 2016 edition of the Foreign Ownership in Condominiums report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The report aims to reveal the share of foreign ownership based on the age of the condominium building.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not surprisingly, the report found that foreign ownership is most prevalent in new condo buildings in Toronto and Vancouver. But here\u2019s the thing: The report only examines condo purchases by foreign buyers. It does not examine the percentage of foreign ownership in single residential homes\u2014the one segment of the real estate market that has witnessed astronomical price increases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CMHC acknowledges this weakness stating in the report: \u201cDespite a range of statistics suggested by various studies on the size of foreign ownership, available factual information remains scarce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Actually, this lack of information was the impetus behind CMHC\u2019s decision to start collecting data on foreign ownership in condo purchases. They started collecting this data in 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bob Dugan, chief economist at CMHC, states in the report: \u201cThis report represents another piece in the puzzle of foreign investment in Canada.
