Things You Need to Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the warmer weather being a favourite time for repairs, renovations and landscaping, it\u2019s worth looking at how these jobs can be done safely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s easy to take many of the comforts of modern life for granted. But when they break down and need to be repaired or replaced, we want the job done properly and safely by people who know what they are doing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BC Safety Authority (BCSA) works with all British Columbians to ensure that repairs, renovations and new installations are done safely and properly by licensed contractors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Statistics show that people working without a permit or licence are six times more likely to leave behind a serious hazardous condition compared to those who obtain the legally required permits and licences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As permits are required by law in B.C., licensed contractors, property managers, business owners and homeowners must obtain permits any time regulated work is being performed, including installing and updating electrical equipment such as wiring a house or commercial building, installing gas equipment such as heating or cooking appliances, and installing larger operating equipment such as elevators or boilers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BCSA can take enforcement actions by issuing warning notices and compliance orders, levying fines (called monetary penalties) and suspending or revoking contractors\u2019 licences if safety rules and regulations are not followed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The following six steps are a guide to stay safe :<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1. Ensure your insurance :<\/strong> Homeowners and contractors may be held liable for damage and injuries caused by regulated work performed without a permit or licence. Your commercial or homeowner insurance coverage may be void if an incident occurs on your property due to work performed without a permit or licence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2. Home renovations :<\/strong> Close to 30 per cent of people planning renovations have identified their bathrooms or kitchens for an upgrade. These are two areas of the home where electrical and gas installations are often part of the renovation. Repositioning major appliances and moving the electrical connections requires permits and should be completed by a licensed contractor. BCSA has contractor and homeowner guides for gas and electrical safety.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3.Buying or selling a home :<\/strong> Check that any renovation work has been performed under permit by a licenced contractor. It\u2019s no secret home sales are booming across BC. In the rush to sell or buy don\u2019t forget to ask for copies of permits for renovations. If you are buying a house that has been renovated, you can check whether the necessary permits were issued by calling 1-866-566-7233.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4. Appliance maintenance at the cottage :<\/strong> It\u2019s time to unwind for summer, but don\u2019t forget about upgrading any electrical systems, gas systems or maintenance on appliances at vacation properties. Have a licensed contractor perform the work with a permit to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning or fire hazards. Hire a licensed contractor :<\/strong> A licensed contractor obtains permits on your behalf, manages the inspection process and employs people who are qualified and bonded, leaving you more time to enjoy the long, hot days of summer. You can select the contractor of your choice from BCSA\u2019s list of licensed contractors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>6. Report unpermitted or unsafe work :<\/strong> If you suspect work is being done without a permit or you see a potential safety hazard, report it (anonymously if you wish).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BCSA is an independent, self-funded organization mandated to oversee the safe installation and operation of technical systems and equipment in residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
