Genworth Canada, a major private mortgage insurer, brainstormed 10 ways to do just that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1. Rent your basement out<br \/>\nGenworth estimates a bachelor pad could net you $600 to upwards of $1,300, depending on your market, but cautions that being a landlord comes with responsibilities. (Or, you could be like this guy, who paid his Toronto mortgage off in three years by living in the basement and renting out the rest of the house.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2. Let an international student room with you<br \/>\nNot all homes have finished basements, but if a homeowner has a spare bedroom, Genworth suggests offering it up to an international student. Room and board could be worth $600 to more than $800 monthly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3. List your abode on Airbnb<br \/>\nIn big cities, the average income homeowners can make from an Airbnb listing is $128 a night, notes Genworth. If you\u2019re going on vacation, this could help cover some of the costs while you\u2019re away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">4. Bring the movie set home<br \/>\n\u201cRent your home out as a film or commercial location,\u201d says Genworth, but there\u2019s a big catch: you\u2019ve got to be \u201cable to move out at the drop of a hat and are willing to meet pertinent local bylaws and regulations.\u201d The payoff? Anywhere from $500 to $5,000 per day \u2014 and your house could become part of Hollywood history. thisopenspace is one example of a peer-to-peer service connects homeowners with opportunities like that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">5. Rent out parking<br \/>\nParking in major urban centres can come at a premium, especially in a central location. Genworth says the \u201cbig-city average\u201d for money made from a sliver of paved space is $140 a month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">6. Or how about a shed, garage or barn?<br \/>\nYour garage could be a jam space for a band, or a place for an auto enthusiast to work on a restoration project. It could get noisy, but if the decibels aren\u2019t a concern, homeowners in major cities can earn an average of $220 per month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">7. Start dogsitting<br \/>\nMaybe film crews traipsing through the living room isn\u2019t appealing, but how about a teacup Pomeranian? Apps such as Wag! pair dog owners with hosts. \u201cOwners often expect a kennel-free homestay,\u201d Genworth notes, pegging possible earnings at $25 to $40 per night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">8. Share underused items<br \/>\n\u201cMake money by renting power tools or other items gathering dust in your basement,\u201d suggests Genworth, providing shareshed.ca as a possible rental site to use. A pair of skis (with boots and poles) are currently available for $20 a day in Vancouver via ShareShed, for example.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">9. Lend your garden space<br \/>\nHomeowners who don\u2019t consider themselves green thumbs might want to look to leaving their garden plots in more-capable hands. It\u2019s less likely to pay in dollars and cents, but it\u2019s not without potential perks. \u201cFree (possibly organic) produce will cut your grocery bill,\u201d says Genworth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">10.
